The Neil Young lawsuit against Donald Trump’s political action committee seeks $10 million over the alleged unauthorized use of Rockin’ in the Free World as Trump’s walkup music at midterm election rallies.
Neil Young lawsuit alleges settlement breach
Young filed the suit against Trump 47 Committee Inc. on October 26, 2026. He alleges that the committee used the song without authorization and that Trump resumed using it in violation of an earlier settlement.
The musician previously sued Trump over use of the same song in 2020. That case was later settled.
Licensing claim
The new suit alleges that Trump knew a license was required to play the song at rallies and that Young had not granted one and would not do so.
Rockin’ in the Free World was released in 1989. The filing describes the song as a critique of political promises and social hardship.
