Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered tighter pumping station security and the deployment of additional Coast Guard personnel after cable theft disrupted a flood-control facility in Pasay City, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said on October 24, 2026.
Pumping station security order follows theft
Cables and other components were stolen from the Diokno Pumping Station more than a week before Dizon’s announcement, affecting its operations. At least three suspects have been arrested, Dizon said.
The contractor will replace the stolen components at no cost to the government. Dizon did not provide a completion date for the replacement.
Coast Guard personnel to be deployed
Marcos’ directive calls for additional Philippine Coast Guard personnel to be stationed at pumping facilities and for stricter security measures to prevent further theft.
The stations help drain floodwaters from vulnerable areas, particularly during heavy rain. Dizon said stolen equipment could leave facilities inoperable and expose communities to severe flooding.
