United premium travel revenue rose 17% year over year in the third quarter of 2026, while contracted business revenue increased 26%. The results, released on October 20 ahead of the airline’s October 21 earnings discussion, accompanied an expanding Starlink rollout and management’s forecast for faster revenue growth in the fourth quarter.

Key Takeaways

  • Premium and contracted business revenue grew strongly, alongside gains in economy travel.
  • Starlink was installed on more than 640 aircraft, with fleet-wide availability targeted for the end of 2027.
  • United expects fourth-quarter revenue growth above 20%, but higher fuel costs remain a pressure on profitability.

United premium travel gains accompany broader demand growth

United’s third-quarter results announcement showed that growth extended beyond premium cabins. Economy cabin revenue increased for a third consecutive quarter, with economy unit revenue up 17% from a year earlier.

Total operating revenue reached $17.9 billion, up 17.4%, while capacity increased 1.3%. Total revenue per available seat mile, a measure of revenue relative to flying capacity, rose 15.9%. The comparison shows that revenue growth substantially outpaced the expansion in flying.

Contracted business revenue growth also exceeded premium revenue growth. These are distinct measures: corporate travel demand and premium-cabin sales should not be treated as interchangeable.

Starlink moves toward wider flight coverage

United said Starlink was available on about half of its flights, including regional services, and that it was equipping approximately three additional aircraft each day. More than 5.4 million customers used the service in September.

The airline expects coverage to reach 61% of flights by the end of 2026 and availability to extend fleet-wide by the end of 2027. Those figures are rollout targets, not completed milestones.

Chief Executive Scott Kirby said Starlink was helping attract customers who then stayed for United’s broader service and technology offering. Connectivity is not restricted to premium passengers: Starlink is free for MileagePlus members in every class of service.

Fuel costs temper the revenue performance

The stronger sales performance came with a substantial increase in fuel expense, which rose 62%, or $1.8 billion, from the third quarter of 2025.

United reported net income of $1.0 billion and diluted earnings per share of $3.14. Adjusted net income was $833 million, with adjusted diluted earnings of $2.54 per share. Its reported pre-tax margin was 7.3%, compared with an adjusted pre-tax margin of 6.2%.

Management expects fourth-quarter operating revenue to increase more than 20% year over year. That is a revenue forecast, rather than a promise of a corresponding increase in profit.

International expansion remains planned for summer 2027

United announced service to 10 new international destinations planned for summer 2027, including Catania, Ibiza, Okinawa and Valencia. All new routes remain subject to government approval.

The network plans would broaden United’s international offering alongside its investment in connectivity and premium services, but the announced destinations are not yet operating routes.

Conclusion

The next checkpoints are United’s fourth-quarter revenue performance against its above-20% growth forecast and the year-end Starlink coverage target. Both will help show how its stronger demand and service investment are progressing.
