China GDP grew 4.5% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, up from 4.3% in the second quarter, the National Bureau of Statistics said on October 19. Stronger industrial activity and exports accompanied the modest acceleration, but weak consumer spending and a steep decline in property investment showed that the recovery remained uneven.

Key Takeaways

  • Third-quarter GDP growth accelerated, but remained below the first quarter’s 5.0% pace.
  • September industrial production strengthened as exports recorded rapid growth.
  • Sluggish retail sales and falling investment highlighted persistent domestic-demand weakness.

China GDP accelerates after a weaker second quarter

The National Bureau of Statistics’ first-three-quarters economic release put cumulative GDP at 107,107.1 billion yuan, with real growth of 4.6% from a year earlier. The figures are preliminary estimates.

On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis, the economy expanded 1.2% in the third quarter, compared with 0.9% in the second. That measure captures growth from the immediately preceding quarter, rather than the year-earlier comparison used in the headline figure.

The improvement therefore appeared in both measures of growth. Even so, the year-on-year rate remained 0.5 percentage points below the first quarter, making the latest result a partial recovery in momentum rather than a return to the pace seen at the start of 2026.

Industry and exports show stronger momentum

Value added at industrial enterprises above the designated size rose 5.5% year on year in September, accelerating by 0.3 percentage points from August. For the first nine months, industrial output increased 5.3%.

Equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing grew faster than industry overall during the nine-month period, rising 10.2% and 14.3%, respectively. Services also expanded, with the sector’s value added increasing 5.2%.

Goods exports rose 16.4% in the first three quarters and 29.6% in September alone, measured in yuan. These figures show strength in production and external trade, although they do not by themselves quantify how much each contributed to GDP growth.

Consumption and property remain weak spots

Retail sales of consumer goods increased just 1.1% year on year in the first three quarters, with September recording the same growth rate. Retail sales of services performed better, rising 5.0% over the nine-month period.

Fixed-asset investment excluding rural households fell 7.2%, while real estate development investment dropped 20.6%. Excluding real estate development, fixed-asset investment still declined 4.2%, indicating that investment weakness extended beyond property.

The statistics bureau said insufficient domestic demand remained a prominent problem and that the foundation for stable growth needed strengthening. Its assessment tempers the stronger headline GDP figure: faster production and trade had not yet translated into a broad improvement across spending and investment.

Conclusion

The third-quarter figures establish a modest pickup in growth, not a broad-based recovery. Fourth-quarter consumption and investment data will be important for assessing whether the improvement extends beyond production and trade.
