Alcoa results for the third quarter of 2026 showed net income attributable to the company of $483 million as aluminum production increased and the Alumar smelter restart was completed. The October 15 announcement also outlined agreements to sell portions of its Massena East site for potential proceeds of up to $315 million, although most of that money would depend on future data center development.

Key Takeaways

  • Reported profit rose from both comparison quarters, but adjusted earnings fell sequentially.
  • Massena East proceeds would be phased, with only $50 million to $65 million expected at closing.
  • Alcoa maintained annual production guidance while warning of fourth-quarter aluminum cost pressures.

Alcoa results show a mixed sequential picture

Alcoa’s third-quarter 2026 earnings announcement showed revenue of $3.704 billion, compared with $3.966 billion in the second quarter and $2.995 billion a year earlier. Net income attributable to Alcoa increased to $483 million, or $1.81 per share, from $407 million in the preceding quarter and $232 million a year earlier.

The sequential improvement in reported profit reflected favorable mark-to-market changes on Ma’aden shares and energy contracts, improved production costs and higher alumina prices. Lower aluminum prices and shipments partly offset those benefits.

Adjusted net income moved in the opposite direction, falling to $485 million from $562 million in the second quarter. Adjusted EBITDA excluding special items declined by $112 million to $789 million, as lower aluminum prices and shipments outweighed production-cost improvements and stronger alumina prices.

ItemDetails
2026 alumina production guidance9.5 million to 9.6 million metric tons.
2026 alumina shipment guidance11.5 million to 11.6 million metric tons, including trading volumes and externally sourced alumina.
2026 aluminum production guidance2.4 million to 2.6 million metric tons.
2026 aluminum shipment guidance2.6 million to 2.8 million metric tons.

Massena East payments depend on development milestones

Alcoa entered into definitive agreements during the quarter to sell portions of the Massena East site in New York. Closing was expected within six months, subject to permitting, regulatory approvals, conditions required to begin construction and other customary requirements.

The company expected approximately $50 million to $65 million at closing, depending on approved data center capacity. Additional payments of approximately $60 million to $250 million could follow as capacity expansions are approved and capacity is commissioned over the seven years after closing.

Most proceeds were expected within the first five years. The headline $315 million is therefore a potential total, not cash already received or an amount entirely payable when the transaction closes.

Production rises as acquisition financing lifts cash

Aluminum production increased 2% sequentially to 649,000 metric tons, marking a sixth consecutive quarterly increase. Alcoa completed the restart of its Alumar smelter in Brazil, while alumina production rose 11% to 2.5 million metric tons, primarily because of improved stability at the Pinjarra refinery in Australia.

Cash from operations totaled $643 million and free cash flow was $472 million. Quarter-end cash of $4.4 billion included $2.6 billion raised through debt offerings for the planned acquisition of South32’s interests in bauxite, alumina and aluminum assets, known as AliGroup.

That financing distinguishes the cash balance from cash generated by operations. South32 shareholders approved the acquisition on October 15, 2026, but completion remained expected in the first half of 2027.

Annual output targets hold despite fourth-quarter costs

Alcoa reaffirmed its full-year production and shipment projections and expected higher output and shipments in both operating segments in the fourth quarter.

Management nevertheless expected approximately $30 million of sequential adverse effects from higher raw-material costs and planned maintenance in the Aluminum segment, plus approximately $30 million of unfavorable alumina costs. Those expectations show why additional production would not necessarily translate into a matching improvement in earnings.

Conclusion

The next operating checkpoint is fourth-quarter performance against Alcoa’s unchanged annual output targets and expected cost increases. Separately, the Massena East closing conditions and AliGroup acquisition timetable remain milestones to watch rather than completed transactions.
