Alcoa earnings rose to $483 million in the third quarter of 2026, while adjusted profit declined from the preceding quarter as lower aluminum prices and shipments outweighed operating improvements. Results released on October 15 also showed a $4.4 billion cash balance, including $2.6 billion raised to finance the planned acquisition of South32’s interests in bauxite, alumina and aluminum assets.

Alcoa earnings show a split between reported and adjusted profit
Alcoa’s third-quarter 2026 results announcement put net income attributable to the company at $483 million, or $1.81 per share, compared with $407 million, or $1.53 per share, in the second quarter. A year earlier, net income was $232 million, or $0.88 per share.
The sequential increase reflected favorable mark-to-market changes in Saudi Arabian Mining Company shares and energy contracts, improved production costs and higher alumina prices, partly offset by weaker aluminum prices and shipments.
Adjusted net income, which excludes special items, fell to $485 million, or $1.82 per share, from $562 million, or $2.12 per share. Adjusted EBITDA excluding special items declined by $112 million to $789 million, although it remained well above the $270 million recorded a year earlier.

Higher output did not prevent a revenue decline
Revenue fell 7% from the second quarter to $3.704 billion. The decline was concentrated in aluminum, where segment third-party revenue dropped 9% as shipments and average realized prices weakened. Alumina third-party revenue increased 7%, supported by higher prices and shipments.
Alumina production rose 11% sequentially to 2.5 million metric tons, primarily because of improved stability at the Pinjarra refinery in Australia. Aluminum production increased 2% to 649,000 metric tons, and Alcoa completed the restart of its Alumar smelter in Brazil.
The production and sales figures moved in different directions: aluminum shipments fell 5% after elevated second-quarter volumes associated with repositioning first-quarter inventory. Higher output therefore did not translate immediately into higher quarterly sales.
Acquisition financing boosts the cash balance
Alcoa generated $643 million in operating cash flow and $472 million in free cash flow during the quarter. Its $4.4 billion closing cash balance also included $2.6 billion of financing for the planned acquisition, known as AliGroup; that financing was separate from cash generated by operations.
On September 23, Alcoa completed offerings of $1.5 billion in 6.625% senior notes due in 2034 and $1.1 billion in 6.875% senior notes due in 2036. It intends to combine the proceeds with cash on hand to fund approximately $3.1 billion in acquisition cash consideration and related fees and expenses.
South32 shareholders approved the transaction on October 15. Alcoa said it remained on track to close in the first half of 2027, with regulatory approvals and transition planning continuing. Shareholder approval advances the transaction but does not mean the acquisition is complete.
Production targets hold despite fourth-quarter cost pressure
Alcoa reaffirmed its full-year production and shipment projections. Management expects higher production and shipments in both segments during the fourth quarter as refinery stability improves and smelting output increases.
For fourth-quarter aluminum segment adjusted EBITDA, Alcoa expects approximately $30 million of unfavorable sequential effects from higher raw-material costs and planned maintenance. It separately expects alumina costs within that segment to be unfavorable by approximately $30 million. Alumina segment adjusted EBITDA is expected to remain consistent with the third quarter.
The company also raised its annual interest-expense projection following the acquisition debt issuance. Its full-year operating ranges and selected expense guidance are summarized below.
Conclusion
The next operating test is Alcoa’s fourth-quarter performance against its unchanged annual targets and expected cost pressures. The larger strategic milestone remains the planned AliGroup acquisition closing in the first half of 2027, which has not yet occurred.
