Qubic recovery claims have opened after the layer-1 blockchain restarted following a wallet vulnerability that enabled an attacker to drain roughly $1.4 million in QU tokens from 1,404 accounts, according to the project’s latest update.

Key Takeaways

  • Qubic resumed processing on Oct. 19 after halting the network to prevent further movement of stolen funds.
  • Affected wallet holders have until May 1, 2027, to submit recovery claims.
  • The project urged users of older web-wallet versions to create new wallets and move their funds.

Qubic recovery platform opens after validator approval

Qubic said its validators, known as Computors, approved a recovery plan. Affected users can now check their addresses and submit claims through the project’s reclaim platform, with a filing deadline of May 1, 2027.

The blockchain explorer showed processing resumed at 8:00 pm on Oct. 19, moving beyond tick 85,371,949, where the network had been halted. The pause was intended to prevent further movement of the stolen funds.

Older web wallets remain a security concern

The exploit involved predictable wallet seeds produced by vulnerable wallet software. Qubic said an insecure random-number generator in its web wallet could generate predictable seeds on certain Apple devices and browsers.

The project said it had fixed the seed-generation flaw in the latest web-wallet release. Its subsequent guidance extended beyond accounts already drained: anyone who created a wallet using a version earlier than 4.26.4, released Oct. 19, should treat that wallet as insecure even if no funds were taken.

Qubic instructed those users to update to version 4.26.4 or later, create a new wallet, transfer their funds as soon as possible and stop using the old wallet.

Conclusion

With processing restored, Qubic’s response now centers on recovery claims and moving users away from potentially vulnerable wallets. Affected holders have until May 1, 2027, to file.
