Dow earnings improved sharply in the third quarter of 2026, with net income rising to $525 million from $124 million a year earlier. The materials-science company announced on October 22 that net sales increased 13% to $11.3 billion for the quarter ended September 30, as higher prices more than offset a 1% decline in volume.

Key Takeaways

  • Higher prices, rather than increased overall volume, drove Dow’s sales growth.
  • Operating cash flow rose, supported by improved earnings and working-capital releases.
  • Management maintained its 2026 transformation target of $700 million in growth and productivity benefits.

Dow earnings improve as pricing outpaces volume

Dow’s third-quarter earnings announcement showed local prices increased 14% year over year, led by Packaging & Specialty Plastics and higher polyethylene prices across all regions. Currency had no year-over-year effect on sales. The contrast between rising revenue and falling volume means the sales increase should not be read as a broad expansion in quantities sold.

Packaging & Specialty Plastics sales rose 18% to $5.8 billion, with local prices up 17% and volume increasing 1%. Segment operating EBIT reached $585 million, compared with $199 million a year earlier, as higher integrated margins and company improvement initiatives outweighed higher planned maintenance activity.

Industrial Intermediates & Infrastructure showed a different mix: sales increased 8% to $3.1 billion, but volume fell 7%. Dow said higher Industrial Solutions volumes were more than offset by declines in Polyurethanes & Construction Chemicals, including impacts from the Middle East conflict.

Performance Materials & Coatings sales rose 8% to $2.3 billion, supported by a 5% increase in local prices and 3% volume growth. Downstream silicones helped drive the volume improvement.

Cash generation strengthens alongside operating profit

Operating EBIT increased to $887 million from $180 million a year earlier. Dow attributed the improvement primarily to higher prices and its internal improvement programs, which more than offset increased raw-material and logistics costs. Operating EBIT is a non-GAAP measure that excludes significant items.

Cash provided by operating activities from continuing operations reached $1.839 billion, up $709 million year over year. Chief Executive Officer Karen S. Carter said Dow released more than $400 million of working capital during the quarter and reduced debt by approximately $600 million over the first nine months of 2026.

The stronger cash result therefore reflected both improved earnings and working-capital movements, rather than earnings growth alone.

Transformation targets remain management expectations

Carter said Transform to Outperform remained on track to deliver an increased $700 million in growth and productivity benefits in 2026 and approximately $2 billion in total uplift by the end of 2027. Those figures are management targets, not completed results.

Dow also reported sequential benefits from the first of three European asset shutdowns, with total benefits expected to build through 2027. Management’s broader priorities include investing in differentiated, lower-cost operations while closing higher-cost upstream capacity.

The company is targeting growth in applications including AI infrastructure, home and personal care, electronics, flexible packaging and mobility. Execution remains exposed to the raw-material, energy and logistics pressures that partly offset the quarter’s gains.

Conclusion

Dow’s third-quarter improvement combined stronger pricing, internal cost actions and better cash generation, while volume remained uneven. The next execution milestone is management’s year-end 2026 transformation benefit target, followed by the expected build in European shutdown benefits through 2027.
