MilDef earnings reached quarterly records in July–September 2026 as sales rose 54% organically and order intake exceeded SEK 2 billion for the first time. Results released on October 22 showed a sharp improvement in profitability, but free cash flow remained negative as the defense IT supplier built inventory and accounts receivable increased.

Key Takeaways

  • Adjusted EBITA rose 113% to SEK 180.5 million, outpacing sales growth.
  • A Bundeswehr framework extension helped lift the order backlog to SEK 5.654 billion.
  • Component availability and capacity expansion remain important to delivering the growing order book.

MilDef earnings show stronger operating leverage

MilDef’s third-quarter results announcement showed net sales of SEK 829 million, compared with SEK 540 million a year earlier. Growth was entirely organic and came mainly from the Swedish and German markets.

Adjusted EBITA—earnings before interest, taxes and amortization—rose to SEK 180.5 million from SEK 84.6 million. Its margin widened to 21.8% from 15.7%, showing that operating earnings grew substantially faster than revenue as delivery volumes increased.

The gross margin improved more modestly, reaching 45.4% against 45.0%. Higher growth in systems and integration solutions supported the margin, partly offset by the sales mix of mobile products. Adjusted operating profit after amortization, or EBIT, reached SEK 161.1 million, compared with SEK 64.7 million.

German agreement expands orders, but its ceiling is not guaranteed

Third-quarter order intake rose 130% to SEK 2.091 billion, equivalent to about 2.5 times quarterly sales. The backlog reached SEK 5.654 billion at September 30, up 61% from a year earlier.

A major contributor was a seven-year extension of MilDef’s framework agreement for the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr. The agreement covers computers, displays and network infrastructure and has a potential value of up to EUR 527 million, compared with EUR 80 million under the previous framework.

The potential value is not guaranteed revenue. MilDef received an initial call-off order worth approximately EUR 95.4 million, with deliveries expected to begin late in 2026 and continue during 2027. CEO Daniel Ljunggren said during the earnings call that the overwhelming majority of those deliveries would fall in 2027.

Separately, MilDef secured a hardware order worth around SEK 553 million from a European NATO country, with delivery expected in 2027. Ljunggren described it as a national defense program rather than part of the Eastern Flank build-out.

Inventory investment weighs on quarterly cash flow

Free cash flow was negative SEK 112 million, compared with negative SEK 53 million a year earlier. Stronger profitability was outweighed by additional capital tied up to secure upcoming deliveries and higher receivables following the increase in sales.

That creates a distinction between the quarter’s earnings and cash performance: MilDef recorded higher profit while committing more funding to fulfill future orders. Across the first nine months, however, free cash flow remained positive.

Electronic-component supply remains a constraint. MilDef cited challenges involving both lead times and prices and said it was using selective inventory accumulation, supplier cooperation and customer discussions on pricing to protect delivery capacity.

Capacity expansion supports the next delivery phase

MilDef decided to expand its production and office facility in Rosersberg by another 7,600 square meters. The existing facility, approximately 6,500 square meters, opened in 2025; the additional space is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2028.

The company said the expansion would strengthen its ability to handle higher volumes, particularly under its framework agreement with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

Management cautioned against treating one quarter’s order intake as a steady run rate. Defense procurement and deliveries vary between quarters, while further capacity investment will be needed to support 2027 volumes.

Conclusion

The next scheduled milestone is the start of deliveries under the Bundeswehr call-off in late 2026, ahead of the bulk of shipments in 2027. Converting the larger backlog into deliveries will require continued attention to component supply, production capacity and working capital.
