Automotive safety sensors launched by STMicroelectronics on October 26, 2026, combine acceleration and angular-rate measurements in a single package for vehicle protection and driver-assistance systems. The chipmaker said all four devices are in production, targeting applications from premium vehicles to mass-market models.

Key Takeaways

  • Four combined accelerometer and gyroscope devices are in production for active and passive vehicle safety systems.
  • The launch is ST’s first mass-market product introduction following its early-2026 acquisition of NXP’s automotive and industrial MEMS sensors business.
  • ST says the platform supports multiple safety functions and carries a product-availability commitment of at least 15 years.

Automotive safety sensors target multiple vehicle functions

The new devices give vehicle manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers a common sensor platform for applications including crash protection, rollover detection, airbag deployment, stability control and radar beam stabilization.

Combining accelerometers and gyroscopes brings measurements of acceleration and rotational motion into one package. ST says that approach can simplify system architecture and help manufacturers scale safety features across different vehicle categories.

Simone Ferri, executive vice president of ST’s MEMS Sub-Group, said the cohesive sensor set is intended to accelerate development and give customers more flexibility in selecting features and performance. The announcement did not disclose customer contracts, sales expectations or public pricing.

Four configurations share a safety-focused design

The lineup differs in the axes measured and the acceleration ranges supported. ST’s NCS1012BAEP product specifications describe that model as combining z-axis angular-rate sensing with xy acceleration sensing and a SafeSPI-compatible interface.

ST says all four devices integrate internal diagnostics and comply with ISO 26262, the automotive functional-safety standard. They also support SafeSPI, a serial interface that enables independent monitoring of sensor data.

The angular-rate sensors offer full-scale ranges of ±125, ±250 or ±350 degrees per second and operate from −40°C to +105°C. Low-g acceleration ranges extend from ±1.50 g to ±34 g, while the medium-g version spans ±15.5 g to ±150 g. All four use 24-pin QFN packages measuring 6 mm by 6 mm by 1.90 mm.

Launch follows NXP sensor-business integration

These are the first mass-market products introduced after ST acquired NXP’s automotive and industrial microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, sensors business in early 2026. The acquisition expanded ST’s existing MEMS capabilities.

Alongside the launch, ST emphasized its commitment to keep products available for at least 15 years. For vehicle manufacturers planning long-running programs, that commitment is intended to limit lifecycle and redesign risks. Sample requests and pricing are being handled through ST’s sales offices.

Conclusion

With production underway, the next step for prospective customers is obtaining samples and pricing through ST’s sales offices. The announcement establishes product availability but does not identify vehicle programs adopting the new sensors.
