China stocks surrendered early gains to trade lower by the midday break on October 27, 2026, while Hong Kong shares also slipped. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.1% to 3,692.58 points, with sharper losses in technology shares contrasting with gains in banks.

Key Takeaways

  • The CSI Semiconductor Index fell 2.2% to a fresh six-month low.
  • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Tech Index underperformed the broader benchmark.
  • Official industrial-profit growth provided a stronger economic backdrop but did not coincide with broad equity gains.

China stocks show a widening technology divide

The blue-chip CSI300 Index was down 0.1% at midday, matching the Shanghai Composite’s percentage decline. Technology-focused benchmarks recorded larger losses, extending the sector’s retreat.

The CSI AI Index dropped 0.8%, alongside the steeper fall in semiconductor shares. By contrast, the CSI Banks Index rose 0.8%. The divergence shows that the weakness was concentrated in technology rather than shared evenly across sectors.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index slipped 0.1%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index declined 0.8%. These readings describe the midday trading snapshot, not closing results.

Industrial profits rise, with uneven sector performance

The National Bureau of Statistics’ January–September industrial profit release showed that profits at China’s industrial enterprises above the designated size rose 15.5% year over year in the first nine months of 2026. September profit growth was 14.4%.

The sector breakdown was uneven: manufacturing profits increased 17.0% in January–September, while mining profits rose 38.2%. Profits in electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply fell 14.3%.

High-tech manufacturing profits rose 52.0% over the nine-month period. That operating improvement and the day’s technology-share losses measure different things: cumulative business performance versus a single trading session’s market pricing.

Liquidity facility adds a separate policy development

China’s central bank announced on October 26 that it had decided to establish a swap facility to provide emergency liquidity to non-bank financial institutions facing large-scale redemptions.

The announcement concerns support for redemption-related funding stress. It does not establish that institutions had already drawn funds, or that the facility caused the observed stock-market moves.
