PhonePe Tatkal NPS launched on October 27, 2026, allowing users to open a National Pension System account through the app with an initial contribution as low as ₹250. The service is live with select partner banks, and PhonePe plans to expand banking coverage over time.
How PhonePe Tatkal NPS works
Users search for NPS in the PhonePe app, select a linked bank account, authenticate with a bank one-time password and make an initial payment through the Unified Payments Interface, or UPI.
The service uses a Tatkal NPS framework developed by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. It reuses existing bank know-your-customer data, so users do not need to upload fresh documents and can generate a Permanent Retirement Account Number within the app.
PhonePe said the process is paperless and does not require a prior visit to a bank branch or pension office.
Who the service targets
PhonePe is positioning the product for gig workers, freelancers and small business owners outside employer-linked retirement schemes, as well as younger users making their first retirement investment.
The company reported approximately 73 crore registered users as of September 2026. Its platform also offers mutual funds, stock broking, insurance and lending.
