XCMG Group deployed heavy equipment to help rescue teams after the Nairobi building collapse on October 23, 2026, with an excavator helping crews free two people from the rubble.
Nairobi building collapse rescue
The 18-story building under construction collapsed in the afternoon in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighborhood. Ground-floor shops were open and construction workers were on site at the time.
The Kenya Defence Forces, the Red Cross and police responded. Thick layers of concrete and a large volume of rubble created a need for heavy lifting and demolition equipment.
Excavator and crane deployed
After a request for assistance, XCMG’s Kenya office sent an excavator on October 23 and a 25-tonne crane the following day. Its personnel and equipment worked under the direction of the on-site rescue team.
Police officer William Sifuna Watitwa said the excavator was crucial to freeing the two survivors. He said the crane allowed crews to lift heavy wreckage from above, improving access to areas where survivors might be found.
As of October 25, government officials said five people remained missing and four were receiving hospital treatment. XCMG said its team would continue supporting the rescue operation until its work was complete.
