Proyekto Custodia, an initiative of Cebuana Lhuillier Foundation Inc., will share more than 100 antique religious artworks, devotional icons and ceremonial church objects with selected churches across the Philippines.
Key Takeaways
- The objects will come from the collection of Cebuana Lhuillier founder and chairman Philippe Lhuillier.
- The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines will help identify suitable recipients.
How Proyekto Custodia will work
The foundation is supporting the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, or CBCP, in its efforts to safeguard religious art. The initiative aims to bring objects to historic churches, missionary parishes and rural chapels, where they can be appreciated in settings that reflect their religious significance.
The CBCP will help endorse the initiative to more than 100 heritage churches nationwide and guide the selection of recipients. The number of churches approached is separate from the number ultimately chosen to receive objects.
Churches will be matched with objects
Jean Henri Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier’s president and CEO, said his family hoped the artworks would find homes in churches where parishioners and visitors could learn about their significance.
Jo-Ann Tacorda, Cebuana Lhuillier’s first vice president and chief administrative officer, said coordination with the CBCP would help the foundation understand churches’ needs and place pieces where they can be cared for.
