Banas Dairy’s ₹325-crore cattle breeding and research centre in Gujarat is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 30, 2026. The facility aims to improve indigenous breeds and help farmers raise milk yields.
Banas Dairy targets 25,000 embryos a year
The Bharat Bovine Breeding and Research Centre covers 127 acres at Bhildi in Banaskantha district. It aims to produce 25,000 high-quality embryos annually using techniques including ovum pick-up, in-vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer.
The centre plans to work with cattle breeds including Kankrej, Gir, Sahiwal and Tharparkar, as well as Mehsani, Banni, Jafrabadi and Murrah buffaloes. Assisted reproduction can produce multiple embryos from genetically superior animals, potentially spreading desirable traits faster than conventional breeding.
Support and other planned projects
The facility was developed with technical guidance from the National Dairy Development Board and support under the central government’s National Gokul Mission, which focuses on developing and conserving indigenous bovine breeds.
During the October 30 programme, Modi is also scheduled to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for four other Banas Dairy development projects, Gujarat’s Agriculture and Cooperation Department said.
