TASMAC digital payments will become mandatory for single retail liquor purchases above ₹1,000 from November 1, 2026, a senior official at the state-owned Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation said.

How the TASMAC digital payments rule works

Customers making a single purchase above the threshold must pay digitally, including through UPI, debit cards or credit cards. Purchases of ₹1,000 or less can still be paid for in cash or digitally.

Tamil Nadu has 4,048 TASMAC retail liquor shops, the official said. Digital payment options are already available, but most transactions continue to be made in cash. The mandate will be introduced in phases; the official did not specify later phases.

Staff controls and implementation

TASMAC has barred staff from accepting payments through personal QR codes or individual bank accounts. Supervisors have been instructed to issue a physical bill for every purchase and release bottles only after checking the transaction on official point-of-sale machines.

The official said violations would lead to severe disciplinary action. Shops are to display notices, while district managers will audit payment machines, check network connectivity and conduct weekly reviews.

The official cited cash-handling risks and repeated complaints of charges above the maximum retail price. Digital transactions would record payment amounts and times and credit sales revenue directly to official bank accounts, the official said.
