Envision CEO and founder Lei Zhang has been named a Sustainability Trailblazer at the 2026 Reuters Global Sustainability Awards, recognizing his work connecting renewable energy, smart technology and industry.

Key Takeaways

  • Zhang launched Mission GOBI in 2026, targeting 5 gigawatts of renewable-powered AI infrastructure by 2030.
  • Envision’s Galaxy Campus in Ulanqab began operating in August 2026 as the initiative’s first flagship project.

Envision CEO links AI growth to clean energy

Zhang sees energy supply, alongside chips, as a fundamental constraint on AI growth. His proposed approach combines renewable electricity with intelligent energy management to support computing demand.

Mission GOBI aims to locate AI computing in areas rich in wind and solar resources. The initiative seeks to use demand for computing to encourage clean-energy investment and align computing activity with the availability of renewable power.

Galaxy Campus and the 2030 target

The Galaxy Campus combines large-scale computing, renewable energy and smart energy management. Envision says it is powered directly by renewable electricity and supported by the company’s AI Power System.

When fully developed, the campus is designed to support AI computing at gigawatt scale, with computing capacity of up to 1 million PFLOPS. That is a design target, not a statement of its current capacity.

The awards received more than 700 entries assessed by an independent panel of 25 judges. Earlier in 2026, Zhang also received the Energy Institute President’s Award.
