HyOrc Corporation plans to develop a facility in Portugal that would process 150 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel per day into methanol, targeting the start of installation in 2028. The HyOrc methanol project is the largest stage in the company’s proposed European deployment roadmap.
Key Takeaways
- HyOrc intends to seek EU Innovation Fund support for the 150-tonne-per-day facility in 2027.
- An earlier 35-tonne-per-day installation is supported by approximately €6.7 million in EU STEP funding awarded to the Portuguese project consortium.
HyOrc methanol project follows a phased roadmap
The company announced the plans on October 26, 2026. Its first planned commercial installation near Porto would process 3 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel per day and produce up to 1 tonne of renewable methanol daily.
A subsequent installation would process 35 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel per day into up to 8 tonnes of renewable methanol. The Portuguese project consortium has been awarded approximately €6.7 million in EU STEP funding for that expansion.
The proposed industrial-scale facility would process 150 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel per day. That figure describes its planned waste input, not its methanol output.
Validation and development risks
Bureau Veritas witnessed a successful pilot conversion of refuse-derived fuel into methanol in April 2026 and reported no non-conformities, HyOrc said. The pilot validation does not mean the planned commercial facilities are operating.
Chief Executive K. Reginald Fubara said the phased approach is intended to establish commercial operating references before HyOrc moves to larger installations. The company cautioned that its plans remain subject to financing, regulatory approvals, technical performance and other risks.
