Digital gold purchases in India rose 83% from a year earlier to Rs 2,590 crore in September 2026, according to the World Gold Council, as buyers continued to make small online purchases despite elevated gold prices.

Key Takeaways

  • September purchase value was 4% higher than in August, while volume reached 1.7 tonnes.
  • India’s securities regulator has warned that digital gold offered on online platforms lacks protections associated with regulated products.

Digital gold purchases grow through September

The World Gold Council said September’s volume was 18% above the long-term monthly average. For January through September, purchases rose 76% to 16.3 tonnes, from 9.2 tonnes in the same period of 2025.

Digital gold allows consumers to buy small quantities online, with the amount recorded against an account. Depending on the provider, purchases are backed by physical gold held in vaults and can be sold online or redeemed as coins and bars.

Investor protections and custody

In November 2025, the Securities and Exchange Board of India cautioned that digital gold products offered by online platforms do not fall under its framework for securities and commodity derivatives. They therefore do not carry the investor protections associated with regulated products.

The industry is working on a self-regulatory framework covering custody, transparency, disclosures and consumer protection. World Gold Council data showed that 52% of digital gold holders had not previously owned gold.

Providers report demand from new buyers

Samit Guha, managing director of gold refiner and digital gold provider MMTC-PAMP, said the company had seen small-ticket purchases using India’s UPI payment system and a growing share of younger, first-time buyers. He said the company’s volumes rose 70% from the second quarter of fiscal 2026 to the second quarter of fiscal 2027.

MMTC-PAMP expects its digital gold volumes during the Dhanteras-Diwali season to grow by more than 50% from a year earlier. That is a company expectation, not a reported result.
