Former Tamil Nadu school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was arrested in Chennai on October 26, 2026, in a school recognition case involving alleged payments of more than ₹100 crore by private schools.

School recognition case follows bail ruling

The Central Crime Branch arrested Poyyamozhi, a leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition in connection with the alleged fraud.

The case concerns money allegedly collected from private school managements in exchange for promises of government approvals and recognition.

Complaint alleges payments by private schools

The case was registered following a complaint by DC Elangovan, secretary of the Federation of Associations of Private Schools in Tamil Nadu.

Elangovan alleged that BT Arasakumar and Muthukumar collected more than ₹100 crore from schools while claiming to be the founder-president and treasurer, respectively, of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association, an unregistered organisation.

The pair allegedly promised to secure permanent government recognition, approvals, clearances and other statutory permissions. The complaint alleged that the money was collected under the guise of contributions to the DMK, which was in power at the time.
