India defence acquisitions worth ₹2.12 lakh crore received approval from the Defence Acquisition Council, including proposals for nearly 200 light helicopters, 323 additional artillery guns and new naval equipment. The approvals cover proposed purchases, not completed deliveries.

India defence acquisitions led by helicopter proposal

The largest proposal is for Light Multi-Role Helicopters for the Army and Indian Air Force. They are intended for reconnaissance, combat, search and rescue, and humanitarian assistance.

Nearly 200 helicopters are planned, with procurement conditions requiring production in India. The purchase is likely to be split between two bidders that would establish assembly lines. Tata Advanced Systems, partnered with Airbus, and Adani Defence and Aerospace, partnered with Leonardo, are potential contenders.

A separate Air Force proposal covers 24 Special Utility Helicopters for VVIP transport. Given the limited number, they are likely to be purchased directly from overseas.

Artillery, air defence and naval equipment

The Army proposal includes 323 additional K9 Vajra self-propelled artillery guns upgraded for cold and high-altitude conditions. Other proposed purchases include short-range air defence systems, counter-drone equipment and long-range surveillance and attack drones.

The Air Force would also receive mobile X-band Doppler weather radars. Naval approvals include an active offboard decoy system intended to defend against anti-ship missiles, as well as major platforms including destroyers.
