The Karjat power project in Maharashtra has triggered political and environmental opposition after thousands of trees were marked for removal at the site of Torrent Power’s planned 3,000 MW pumped-storage plant. About 1,800 of the 32,490 trees have already been cut, as of October 26, 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Maharashtra’s government says the project is needed to meet the state’s energy requirements and has received the necessary clearances.
- Torrent Power says the plant would supply 6,570 million units annually and support electricity demand during peak hours.
Karjat power project faces environmental opposition
The project in Karjat, Raigad, near the Sahyadri-Western Ghats range has drawn criticism from residents, activists and political opponents after images of felled trees circulated over the weekend.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray visited Karjat and spoke with locals. He said he supported sustainable development and questioned the government’s protection of the company, referring to its Gujarat links.
Environmentalist Sayaji Shinde questioned why indigenous trees were being cut for the project and warned that removing forest trees would disrupt native wildlife. The Maharashtra government has said it would plant 90,000 saplings.
Government and Torrent defend the plan
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the project had received clearance after following applicable rules and a public hearing. He also described it as environmentally friendly.
Torrent Power said the site is not inside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. The company said the project underwent studies, a public hearing, committee appraisals and site inspections before receiving environment and forest clearances.
The company also said the project would require 52 times less land than a conventional hydropower project of comparable scale.
