The Tata fibre network planned by Tata Communications will span 10,000 kilometres across India and cost $400 million to $450 million, as the company seeks to connect data centres and artificial intelligence hubs.
Tata fibre network starts with a southern corridor
The project will begin with a Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor and is planned in three phases over three to five years, subject to execution conditions. Tata Communications says the network will provide 7.2 petabytes of capacity.
The company also plans to expand connectivity to data centre ecosystems in Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and Gujarat’s GIFT City. The links would connect those hubs to international cable landing stations and complement its subsea infrastructure.
Funding and deployment
Chief Product and Technology Officer Rupesh Chokshi said the project would be funded through operating cash flows. Asked whether the company would raise funds for the venture, he said it would do so eventually if needed.
For the Mumbai-Chennai route, Tata Communications is targeting round-trip latency of 15–16 milliseconds. Chokshi said deployment would require planning for right-of-way permissions, monsoons and route adjustments.
