The Mizoram gas pipeline is under construction to bring piped natural gas for household cooking to the Indian state, with connections expected in 2028. The 119.45-kilometre line from Panisagar in Tripura to Aizawl is estimated to cost ₹491 crore.

Key Takeaways

  • The project will initially cover Mamit and Aizawl districts.
  • The pipeline is expected to reach Mamit town in March or April 2027 and Sihhmui in March or April 2028.
  • Tripura Natural Gas Company is to provide connections after the main pipeline is completed.

Mizoram gas pipeline construction and timetable

Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited, or IGGL, is building the pipeline as part of the Northeast Gas Grid. Mizoram Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B. Lalchhanzova inspected work at Tuidam in Mamit district on October 26, 2026.

The minister said the line is expected to reach Mamit town by March or April 2027 and Sihhmui in Aizawl district by March or April 2028. Piped cooking-gas connections are expected in early 2028, although the minister said Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited would begin supplying consumers after IGGL completes the main pipeline.

Cooking fuel supply and the wider grid

Lalchhanzova said global conflicts and disruptions to energy supplies had periodically caused liquefied petroleum gas shortages in Mizoram, affecting cooking arrangements. He also expressed hope that access to natural gas could eventually support compressed natural gas for vehicles.

The minister said approximately ₹9,265 crore is being invested to lay 1,656 kilometres of natural gas pipelines across northeastern states under the wider grid project. He urged IGGL to speed up work and said the state government would cooperate with the company.
