A Vande Mataram vinyl album featuring three versions of India’s national song has been presented to President Draupadi Murmu. The project commemorates 121 years since an early recording of the song was made on a 78-rpm record.

What is on the Vande Mataram vinyl

Titled The Anthem: Vande Mataram, the album features singer Hariharan performing the song’s original lyrics, a Tamil translation by Subramanian Bharati and an English version rendered by British officer William Herbert Lee in 1906.

Each of the three songs also has an instrumental version. The album includes two taarnas based on Vande Mataram. Hariharan and Leslee Lewis reunited as Colonial Cousins for the English version.

The recording’s anniversary

The album was conceived by Akhilesh Jha, chief controller of accounts in India’s Ministry of Rural Development. It also marks the culmination of 150-year celebration activities for the national song by the Centre for Gramophone and Allied Studies, known as CeGRAMS.

Jha said Steven Carl Porter recorded Narayan Chandra Mukherjee singing Vande Mataram for Nicole Records in Calcutta 121 years earlier. The information available does not specify a retail release date, price or where the new album can be purchased.
