The India enterprise survey for 2027–28 will ask for the first time about gender-specific challenges women face in operating and managing unincorporated businesses. The Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises, or ASUSE, will also add questions on investment and electricity sources, the Statistics Ministry said.

Key Takeaways

  • The 2027–28 survey is scheduled to run from April 2027 through March 2028, aligning it with India’s financial year.
  • A new investment question will cover a longer reference period than the existing survey question.

What the India enterprise survey will ask

The new questions on women entrepreneurs are intended to improve information about the constraints they face in the unincorporated sector. The ministry said the data could help inform policy discussions about women’s participation in economic activity.

The survey will also ask about fixed-asset investment over a longer period and the different electricity sources establishments use. The ministry said these additions would provide a broader view of investment patterns and businesses’ operating conditions.

Survey moves to financial-year schedule

ASUSE will shift from a January–December calendar to an April–March survey period beginning in the 2027–28 financial year. The ministry said the change is intended to align its reference period with other enterprise surveys and make the data more useful for national accounts.

Conducted since 2021–22, ASUSE provides information on employment and gross value added in the unincorporated sector. Its questions also cover participation in e-commerce marketplaces and the use of digital payment instruments, including UPI, mobile wallets and point-of-sale devices.
