Telangana and Maharashtra will form a joint committee to examine Telangana’s proposal to increase the height of the planned Tummidihatti Barrage on the Pranahita River from 148 metres to 152 metres.

Tummidihatti Barrage proposal faces technical review

The committee will be headed by the principal secretaries of the two states’ irrigation departments. It will examine water availability, potential submergence, affected agricultural land, compensation requirements and other technical issues.

The decision to form the panel followed a meeting in Mumbai on October 26, 2026, between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and a Telangana delegation led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

Irrigation needs and potential impacts

Telangana Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy said the 148-metre height provided for in a 2016 agreement would not adequately meet the region’s irrigation needs. He outlined technical and operational advantages of raising the proposed height to 152 metres.

Fadnavis responded positively to the request but said technical, environmental and administrative matters needed examination before a final decision. He said Maharashtra would support Telangana’s water needs if the project did not adversely affect the state or its people.

The barrage is proposed near Tummidihatti village in Telangana’s Komaram Bheem Asifabad district. Revanth Reddy said the project could benefit a historically neglected tribal region and strengthen ties across the state border.
