Manipal Academy of Higher Education has inaugurated the MAHE BSL-3 facility for high-containment biomedical research. The facility is designed to support work on infectious agents that require enhanced containment.

What the MAHE BSL-3 facility will support

The facility has specialised infrastructure, controlled access and engineering controls, alongside stringent biosafety practices. It is intended to strengthen research, diagnostics and surveillance of infectious diseases, as well as translational biomedical science.

A media statement said the facility received certification in March 2026 from the Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation at India’s Department of Biotechnology. The inauguration was reported on October 26, 2026.

Committee to oversee biosafety

MAHE has formed a committee for the facility’s governance and biosafety oversight. It includes representatives from constituent units of the academy and members of its Institutional Biosafety Committee.

The multidisciplinary committee is intended to support coordination and compliance with established biosafety and regulatory requirements.
