European shares steady as oil retreats

The pan-European STOXX 600 stood at 636.26 points at 0809 GMT, after its steepest weekly decline since early September.

Oil prices fell from near six-month highs reached the previous week as hopes grew for an easing of tensions between the United States and Iran. European energy stocks fell 0.7%, while travel and leisure shares rose around 1% as lower oil prices eased concerns about fuel costs.

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan were scheduled to meet Iranian leaders in Tehran on Monday. Investors were also assessing political developments in France.

Portugal’s Galp Energia reported a 68% increase in adjusted net profit for the third quarter, beating market expectations. Its shares nevertheless fell 8.5% in early trading.

Computacenter shares rose 6.8% after the technology services provider raised its annual profit guidance.
