Delhi riots bail conditions for accused Shadab Ahmad remain unchanged after India’s Supreme Court declined on October 26, 2026, to modify restrictions he said prevented him from attending law classes in Ghaziabad.

Delhi riots bail request withdrawn

Ahmad sought permission to leave the National Capital Territory of Delhi for classes and to report to the Delhi Police Crime Branch once a week instead of twice. His lawyer said he had enrolled in a three-year law course in Ghaziabad, where classes began in August.

Justices Aravind Kumar and Vipul M. Pancholi declined to change the conditions. The bench allowed Ahmad to withdraw his application and approach the trial court. His lawyer had argued that the trial court could not modify the attendance condition imposed by the Supreme Court.

Conditions and charges

Ahmad was granted bail on January 5 along with four co-accused, and a Delhi court ordered his release on January 8. The Supreme Court imposed 11 conditions, including a requirement to obtain trial-court permission before leaving Delhi and restrictions on attending rallies and distributing campaign material.

The accused face charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code over an alleged conspiracy to orchestrate communal riots in Delhi in February 2020.
