ROLDA has launched a website for the PawzUp project, a planned animal care center in Galati, Romania, as the organization marks 20 years as a registered Romanian nonprofit. The center is intended to support rescued animals from nearby Romanian counties and neighboring Ukraine.
Key Takeaways
- The planned center would occupy 8.9 hectares and include cage-free spaces for rescued animals.
- ROLDA plans to develop the site in four phases over several years, depending on resources and operational capacity.
- A newly launched website provides information about the project and its development phases.
What the PawzUp project would provide
The planned site would have controlled, cage-free areas where rescued animals could move, socialize and interact with people. ROLDA also intends to introduce programs involving vulnerable members of the community as the project develops.
The center is designed as a regional hub for animals needing help from the Romanian counties of Tulcea, Vaslui, Vrancea and Braila, as well as animals affected by the continuing humanitarian situation in Ukraine. ROLDA said its existing shelters are near the Ukrainian border and can support cross-border efforts when resources and circumstances allow.
Phased development depends on resources
Founder and CEO Dana Costin said the long-term project was divided into four phases to keep construction costs manageable and allow the team to handle each stage’s logistical demands. ROLDA expects gradual development over several years, subject to available resources and operational capacity.
Costin founded the Romanian League in Defence of Animals in 1999. It became a registered Romanian NGO through the ROLDA Foundation in February 2006, initially focusing on homeless dogs in Galati before expanding its animal welfare work.
