AI neocloud providers could face widespread failures and consolidation as financing becomes harder to obtain, Elon Musk warned on October 25, 2026. He said lenders had largely stopped funding companies that lack substantial revenue outside AI data centers.

Key Takeaways

  • Musk said SpaceX secured $40 billion in debt financing for GPUs, helped by its credit standing and other businesses.
  • Gartner forecasts that more than 80% of neocloud providers will no longer operate independently by 2030.
  • The research firm expects AI infrastructure spending to rise sharply, but questions whether providers can earn sufficient returns.

Why AI neocloud providers face pressure

Neocloud companies specialize in renting computing power for artificial intelligence, typically using data centers equipped with powerful graphics processing units, or GPUs.

In a post on X, Musk predicted that many of the more than 200 neocloud providers would fail or consolidate, although he said some would survive. His comments were a forecast, not a count of companies that have already closed.

Musk contrasted those providers with SpaceX, saying the company secured $40 billion in debt financing for GPUs because of its investment-grade status and revenue from Starlink satellite internet and its rocket businesses.

Gartner sees investment returns under strain

In an October forecast, research firm Gartner said more than 80% of neocloud providers would cease operating independently by 2030. It attributed the pressure to the challenge of earning enough from large AI infrastructure investments.

Gartner expects AI providers to spend nearly $1 trillion on infrastructure in 2026 and another $6 trillion from 2027 through 2030. It said revenue would be insufficient to generate profitable returns on all of that investment.

The firm also projected spending on AI-optimized infrastructure-as-a-service would increase from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030. Even so, it said many providers could struggle to recoup their investments before the current generation of AI chips is replaced.

Exposure beyond specialist cloud providers

The outlook also matters for Bitcoin miners that have entered AI infrastructure. IREN rents computing capacity through its AI cloud services, while Core Scientific provides data center hosting to neocloud customers including CoreWeave.

SpaceX reported $7.6 billion in third-quarter revenue from its Super Intelligence business, more than half of its $14.6 billion in quarterly sales. The company attributed the business’s growth to new cloud agreements, its acquisition of Cursor and greater adoption of its Grok AI model.
