Singareni diversification into critical minerals is on Telangana’s agenda after Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka directed the state-owned coal miner to explore opportunities beyond coal and reduce production costs.
Key Takeaways
- The proposed minerals include copper, gold, vanadium and lithium.
- Vikramarka suggested feasibility studies before investment in new mineral sectors.
- The state is discussing previously allocated coal blocks with India’s Union Coal Ministry.
Singareni diversification and future coal demand
At an October 25, 2026 meeting with 66 general managers of Singareni Collieries Company, Vikramarka said the company should assess how solar power, battery storage and pumped storage projects could affect thermal power generation and future coal demand.
He suggested engaging international consultants and conducting detailed feasibility studies before investing in new mineral sectors. His remarks were a direction to explore diversification, not an announcement of completed investments.
Coal costs and mine development
Vikramarka also directed officials to develop new mines, improve productivity and use workers and machinery more efficiently. He warned that customers could choose cheaper coal suppliers if Singareni failed to control costs.
The company supports about 42,000 permanent employees and another 34,000 to 36,000 contract and outsourced workers, he said.
The state is examining options for new mines and has raised with the Union Coal Ministry the possibility of allowing Singareni to use coal blocks previously allocated to it, rather than returning them to auction. Vikramarka also called for a review of coal supply agreements, reserves and production capacity.
