Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi have filed nominations for player representative posts in the AITA elections on November 7, 2026. Leander Paes did not file a nomination, leaving him unable to contest the association’s presidency.

Who is contesting the player representative polls?

Eight former players have filed nominations for Sportsperson of Outstanding Merit representation in the General Body. Alongside Mirza and Bhupathi, they are Ankita Bhambri, Ashutosh Singh, Gaurav Natekar, Janaki Krishnamoorthy, Shalini Thakur Chawla and Vishal Uppal.

Five players are nominated for the Executive Committee: Bhupathi, Mirza, Bhambri, Krishnamoorthy and Uppal.

The amended AITA constitution provides for four player representatives on the General Body, split equally between men and women, and two on the 15-member Executive Committee, with one man and one woman.

Why Paes cannot contest the AITA elections for president

The Bengal Tennis Association, which Paes heads, had publicly backed him for AITA president. But he needed to win a player representative election to stand for the presidency because he remains ineligible to contest as a state representative.

Paes can still participate as Bengal’s representative in the AITA polls scheduled for November 27, 2026, but cannot contest under the amended constitution.
