James Cahill centennial events in Hangzhou honored the US art historian’s scholarship on Chinese art, with his daughter Sarah unveiling a bronze bust at the China Academy of Art.
James Cahill centennial program
Sarah Cahill arrived in Hangzhou on October 17, 2026, for Stones from Other Hills, a series commemorating her father, who lived from 1926 to 2014. The program included a symposium on his legacy, an exhibition of his donated books and archives, and the premiere of a documentary about his life.
She said her father would have valued seeing students engage with his books and video lectures, including editions translated and published in China.
A research library in Hangzhou
Cahill first visited China in 1973 as part of a US art and archaeology delegation and returned in 1977 as the head of another delegation. In 1994, he became the first incumbent of the China Academy of Art’s Pan Tianshou Lecture.
In 2012, he sent his library from Berkeley to Hangzhou: 112 boxes containing books, slides and more than 12,000 images. He wanted the collection to serve as a working research library. After his death, an academy team returned to Berkeley and shipped additional boxes of books.
