Siang project protests in India’s Arunachal Pradesh turned violent in late October 2026, prompting the central government to send two Rapid Action Force companies to the state, officials said on October 25.

Siang project protests and the security response

The protests in Pasighat concerned the proposed 11,200-megawatt Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. Violence began in East Siang district on October 23 and continued until the following morning.

The district administration imposed prohibitory orders across Pasighat, Mebo and Ruksin after a police report warned of an imminent threat to law and order. Inspector General of Police Hibu Tamang appealed for calm and peaceful protests.

Injuries and damage

Police said nearly 40 security personnel were injured and around 15 people were held in connection with the violence. They said more people could be arrested.

A mob set fire to an NHPC office and a police station, while the houses of legislators Ninong Ering and Oni Panyang and state BJP chief Kaling Moyong were attacked and vandalised. Tamang said nine police vehicles were damaged.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu said misinformation and misconceptions about the project were creating apprehension, and called for transparency and open dialogue.
