Siang project protests in India’s Arunachal Pradesh prompted the central government to send two Rapid Action Force companies after violence in Pasighat, officials said on October 25, 2026.
Siang project protests and the security response
The demonstrations concerned the proposed 11,200-megawatt Siang Upper Multipurpose Project. The Ministry of Home Affairs directed that approximately 250 Rapid Action Force personnel be airlifted from Navi Mumbai aboard an Indian Air Force transport aircraft.
Officials said the units were expected to reach Pasighat and deploy by October 25. Multiple Central Reserve Police Force units were already in the affected areas, and some police and central forces personnel had been injured, they said.
Buildings attacked after shutdown
Arunachal Pradesh Police officials said a mob set fire to an NHPC office and a police station in East Siang district on the night of October 23. The mob also vandalized the residences of three political leaders, including the state BJP chief.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu said a 12-hour shutdown across Siang, Upper Siang and East Siang districts had remained largely peaceful. Violence began in Pasighat after it ended and continued until 3:30 a.m. on October 24, his office said. Khandu called for peace and said protests should remain within the law.
