The RBI data centre inaugurated in Bhubaneswar on October 25, 2026, will house critical payment systems and strengthen financial-system resilience, Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra said.

Key Takeaways

  • The facility is intended to house the RBI’s RTGS and NEFT payment systems.
  • A cybersecurity institute at the site will train central bank and financial-sector personnel.

What the RBI data centre will do

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the sovereign data centre and cybersecurity training institute. Malhotra said the RBI would have its own facility rather than depend on third-party cloud service providers.

The centre will house mission-critical systems, including Real Time Gross Settlement, or RTGS, and National Electronic Funds Transfer, or NEFT. The available details do not specify when those systems will move to the new facility.

Why the location matters

Malhotra said Bhubaneswar was chosen partly because the RBI’s three existing data centres are in Maharashtra. Its distance from those facilities and location in a different seismic zone provide geographical diversification. The availability of skilled workers was another factor.

The RBI’s payment systems operate around the clock. Malhotra said that although the National Payments Corporation of India operates the Unified Payments Interface, final settlement of UPI transactions takes place through central bank data centres and applications.

Training for financial-sector staff

One-third of the site is allocated to the data centre and two-thirds to the cybersecurity training institute. The institute will train RBI employees and personnel from banks and other financial institutions in areas including artificial intelligence, big-data analytics, quantum computing and blockchain.

It will also conduct research aimed at making financial systems more secure and efficient, the RBI said.
