The Jio IPO has become India’s largest public offering, at ₹30,213 crore, surpassing Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870-crore issue in 2024. Structured as an offer for sale, the offering does not raise fresh capital for Reliance Jio Platforms.
Key Takeaways
- The offering exceeded the size of Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 IPO.
- The sale gives public-market investors a direct stake in Jio’s digital-services business.
- Reliance Intelligence, which is building AI capabilities and infrastructure, sits outside Jio Platforms.
What the Jio IPO offers investors
The ₹30,213-crore offering puts a market value on Jio’s telecom and digital-services platform. Because it is an offer for sale rather than a fresh issue, the proceeds do not provide new capital to Jio.
The offering was also reported to be the first globally to exceed one crore applications.
Jio’s business and the separate AI strategy
India’s telecom industry has consolidated around Jio and Bharti Airtel after Reliance entered the market with low tariffs more than a decade ago. Jio has built a profitable business as data consumption has expanded.
Beyond mobile connectivity, Jio’s infrastructure and distribution platform span opportunities in fixed broadband, enterprise connectivity, 5G applications, satellite communications and telecom network equipment.
Reliance Intelligence is a separate entity from Jio Platforms. It is building artificial intelligence capabilities and infrastructure, including investments in computing and data-centre capacity. As a result, an investment in Jio Platforms does not necessarily encompass the entire AI opportunity being developed within the Reliance group.
