Navi Mumbai flights will replace selected services from Mumbai’s existing airport as IndiGo and Air India Express begin shifting domestic and international operations in December 2026. The affected services carry around 3 million passengers a year, with many routes serving West Asia.

Key Takeaways

  • IndiGo plans to progressively transfer 12 daily international departures from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai.
  • Air India Express will move four domestic flights in December and plans further international transfers through the next summer season.
  • The transfers will create room for the planned partial closure of Mumbai airport’s Terminal 1 for redevelopment.

Navi Mumbai flights and IndiGo’s route plans

IndiGo’s planned transfers represent more than a third of its current international departures from Mumbai. The routes include destinations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, as well as Dhaka and Jakarta, which depend on connecting traffic from West Asia.

IndiGo and Adani Group said in a joint statement on October 25 that an additional daily Kathmandu service would bring the airline’s Navi Mumbai international network to 12 destinations between February and July 2027. IndiGo will also transition domestic connections needed to support those international flights.

The capacity change will make room for IndiGo to add services from Mumbai to Asia, Africa and Europe, while developing another hub at Navi Mumbai.

Air India Express moves

Air India Express plans to shift four domestic flights to Navi Mumbai in December. An existing Muscat flight and a new Kuwait service are planned from January.

The Air India Group also plans to progressively transition Air India Express services to Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Doha, Muscat and Sharjah, with the process expected to be completed by the next summer season.

The announcements suggest that IndiGo and Air India flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi will continue from Mumbai for now. IndiGo has not announced a transfer of its Doha services.

Terminal 1 redevelopment

Mumbai airport plans to begin redeveloping Terminal 1 in January 2027, requiring a partial closure that would affect around 5 million passengers annually. The airport says the work requires the transfer of one-third of flights from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 and from Terminal 2 to Navi Mumbai.

An earlier proposal to transfer flights during the winter schedule was deferred after airline objections. The Airlines Operators Committee has asked for details of the redevelopment plan, arguing that Terminal 1 handles less traffic than its design capacity of 15 million passengers a year.

Next milestone

The redevelopment issue is expected to be discussed at the next airport and airline meeting on Wednesday.
