The World Weightlifting Championships will be held in Moscow in 2030, the International Weightlifting Federation announced on October 25, 2026. The decision makes weightlifting the first Olympic sport to award Russia global championship hosting rights since 2022.

Key Takeaways

  • The 2030 championships will also serve as a qualifying event for the 2032 Olympic Games.
  • Ahmedabad, India, will host the 2029 senior championships.

World Weightlifting Championships return to Russia

No world championships in an Olympic summer or winter sport have been held in Russia since the start of the war against Ukraine in 2022. The 2025 world swimming championships, originally awarded to Kazan, were moved to Singapore.

Russian Weightlifting Federation president Aleksandr Vinokurov thanked the international federation for its trust and said Moscow had experience hosting major international sporting events.

Olympic eligibility remains contested

The hosting decision follows the International Olympic Committee’s July 7 move to ease restrictions on Russian athletes and open a pathway for them to compete in qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Ukraine appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, asking it to annul the IOC decision. Russian athletes had previously competed under various designations, most recently as Individual Neutral Athletes.
