Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 is set for phased redevelopment that would raise its annual passenger capacity to 20 million from 15 million, Adani Airports said on October 25, 2026. Planned transfers of selected flights to Navi Mumbai International Airport are intended to make room for the work.

Key Takeaways

  • The first phase aims to shift approximately 5 million passengers to Navi Mumbai.
  • Adani Airports said airlines’ historical Mumbai airport slots would be restored after redevelopment.

Mumbai Airport Terminal 1 redevelopment plan

The planned increase of approximately 33% would replace ageing infrastructure with a modernized, digitally enabled terminal, Adani Airports said. The work is intended to improve safety and passenger facilities as well as expand capacity.

The airport operator said the plan followed nearly 18 months of consultations with airlines. It did not give a completion date in its briefing.

Flight transfers to create room for work

IndiGo and Air India have agreed to shift part of their operations to Navi Mumbai. The planned transfer of around 3.6 million passengers represents approximately 70% of the traffic targeted for relocation in the first phase, Adani Airports said.

The operator described the relocation as temporary and said airlines would retain their historical slots at Mumbai airport for restoration after the work is completed. About 9% of the airport’s annual traffic of 55 million passengers would be transitioned under the program, it said.

Navi Mumbai capacity and connections

Navi Mumbai International Airport’s Terminal 1 is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually, with future expansion planned to reach 90 million, Adani Airports said.

Three new bridges built by CIDCO across Panvel Creek and the Gadhi River are intended to improve connections between the airport and surrounding roads, including Atal Setu and the Ulwe Coastal Road.
