Odisha cyclone preparations focus on evacuation

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed officials to prioritize public safety and move people from vulnerable areas to safer locations. Elderly people, patients and pregnant women should receive particular attention and be moved to health facilities if necessary, he said.

Around 60 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force teams and 17 National Disaster Response Force teams have been deployed, while 225 Fire Services teams are on high alert. The state also cancelled leave for district collectors, district magistrates and other officers in critical offices.

In Ganjam, officials have readied 100 cyclone shelters and identified 1,000 temporary locations for use if evacuation becomes necessary, District Collector Keerthi Vasan V said.

Forecast landfall and rainfall warnings

The India Meteorological Department expects the Bay of Bengal depression to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast as a very severe cyclonic storm, with sustained winds of 115–125 km/h and gusts up to 140 km/h. Officials said the predicted landfall area was about 300 km from Gopalpur in Odisha.

The agency forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha from October 27 to 29. Its October 28 red warning covers Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam, where isolated extremely heavy rainfall could exceed 20 cm.

Schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in those five districts will close on October 28 and 29. Collectors elsewhere will decide on closures as conditions evolve. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from October 24.
