Global conflict costs are falling on societies and economies far from the fighting, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on October 25, 2026, as he called for international cooperation on peace and economic pressures.
Key Takeaways
- Jaishankar cited the wars in Ukraine and West Asia as conflicts affecting people beyond those regions.
- He said developing countries faced pressures involving finance, fuel, food and fertilisers.
- The minister called for dialogue and diplomacy, as well as a more inclusive approach to artificial intelligence.
Global conflict costs and shared security
Speaking at the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan on the occasion of United Nations Day, Jaishankar said globalisation had deepened the connections between nations and made peace a shared concern.
Referring to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, he said: “Societies and economies, peoples far away who have little say in the matter, are actually paying the cost. We cannot remain helpless spectators.”
Jaishankar said dialogue and diplomacy remained the only solution to global conflicts. He said India was making its own efforts and was open to working with other partners to advance peace.
Developing economies and technology
The minister described a “4F crisis” facing the Global South: finance, fuel, food and fertilisers. He called on the Global North to recognise its stake in resolving those pressures and said restrictions and choke points were worsening market distortions.
Jaishankar also called for a responsible, inclusive and human-centric approach to artificial intelligence, cautioning against leaving a technology with far-reaching consequences in the hands of a few.
UN cooperation and terrorism
Jaishankar cited Article 1 of the UN Charter, saying it envisaged the organisation as a centre for harmonising nations’ actions toward common objectives. He described UN Day as an occasion to advance shared purpose and cooperation.
He also identified terrorism as a major threat to peace and rejected its use as an instrument of statecraft.
