SJ Suryah plays antagonist Bodhi Kalpak in Jailer 2, the Rajinikanth film released on October 15, 2026. The film had earned more than Rs 616 crore at the box office by October 25, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2026 at that point.
SJ Suryah’s early career
Suryah has said he turned down an engineering college place in Madurai and studied physics at Loyola College in Chennai instead, hoping that being in the city would help him meet film directors.
After graduating, he worked in hotels as a cashier, steward and cleaner. He has spoken about cleaning tables while former classmates visited as customers, saying he did not feel ashamed of the work.
From directing to acting
Suryah later worked as an assistant director and appeared in uncredited film roles. His directorial debut, Vaalee, became a commercial success, as did his 2000 film Kushi.
He made his acting debut in the 2004 film New and later appeared in Iraivi, Spyder and Mersal. His subsequent antagonist roles include parts in Mark Antony, Indian 2 and Raayan.
