NBT Bancorp earnings and interest income
Third-quarter net income also increased from $53.0 million, or $1.02 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2026. Operating diluted earnings per share, a non-GAAP measure, were $1.11, compared with $1.05 a year earlier.
NBT said the quarterly increase in net interest income reflected organic growth in average loans, one additional day in the quarter and $1.5 million more in purchase accounting accretion. Its net interest margin on a fully taxable equivalent basis widened by 5 basis points from the second quarter to 3.78%.
Noninterest income excluding securities gains was $52.9 million, up 6.7% from the second quarter. Noninterest expense rose to $115.2 million from $111.4 million.
Loans, deposits and credit quality
Loans at September 30 totaled $11.95 billion, up from $11.60 billion at December 31, 2025. Deposits rose to $13.59 billion from $13.50 billion over the same period.
The provision for loan losses fell to $3.8 million from $6.1 million in the preceding quarter. NBT attributed the decline primarily to lower loan growth and a decrease in the allowance for loan losses.
Nonperforming assets rose as a share of total assets during the quarter. The company attributed the increase mainly to additional commercial lending relationships placed in nonaccrual status and an increase in past-due residential loans.
Dividend and share repurchases
The declared dividend is $0.03 per share, or 8.1%, higher than the dividend paid in the third quarter of 2025. NBT said it marks its fourteenth consecutive year of annual dividend increases.
The company bought 20,118 shares for $1.0 million during the third quarter and a further 113,364 shares after quarter-end. As of October 24, 2026, it had 1,297,923 shares available for repurchase under its plan.
Next milestone
NBT scheduled a conference call to review the results for October 28, 2026, at 10 a.m. Eastern.
