Pegasystems earnings show a split between reported and adjusted profit

The company’s third-quarter results announcement, released on October 20, covered the three months ended September 30, 2026. GAAP net income declined from $43.4 million a year earlier, while diluted earnings per share fell from $0.24 to $0.08.

Operating income was comparatively steady at $14.9 million, versus $14.5 million a year earlier. The bottom-line comparison also reflected a shift from a $19.3 million income-tax benefit in the prior-year quarter to a $3.7 million tax provision.

Adjusted net income increased 8% to $59.8 million, and adjusted diluted earnings per share rose 17% to $0.35. These non-GAAP figures excluded stock-based compensation, legal fees, a $16 million litigation settlement and other adjustments. They are not substitutes for GAAP results.

Cloud expansion offsets declines elsewhere

Pega Cloud revenue reached $218.9 million, up from $184.5 million a year earlier, and accounted for 56% of quarterly revenue compared with 48% in the prior-year period. That expansion offset declines in maintenance, subscription-license and consulting revenue.

Cloud annual contract value, or ACV, grew 20% and represented 59% of total ACV. Total ACV reached $1.653 billion at September 30, up 6% as reported and 7% in constant currency.

The contrast matters: strong cloud growth did not translate into equally strong companywide growth. Total subscription revenue increased 7%, but weaker consulting revenue limited overall revenue growth to 3%.

Management cites execution challenges and customer scrutiny

Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Ken Stillwell attributed the disappointing ACV growth through the first three quarters largely to go-to-market execution challenges. He nevertheless said the third-quarter ACV addition was the strongest of the year.

Pegasystems also said customers were subjecting large technology investments to greater scrutiny as artificial intelligence disrupts the industry. The company warned that these purchasing patterns could continue to hurt ACV growth for the remainder of 2026.

Chief Executive Officer Alan Trefler emphasized the company’s strategy of combining AI models with workflow automation and decisioning, while maintaining governance, security and control for mission-critical operations. Management said it was taking action to improve execution and accelerate growth, without detailing those actions in the release.

Cash generation remains under pressure

Cash provided by operating activities totaled $304.3 million for the first nine months of 2026, down from $346.8 million a year earlier. Pegasystems warned that the same factors slowing ACV growth could continue to adversely affect cash generation through year-end.

Stillwell maintained management’s ambition to deliver at least $700 million of free cash flow in 2028. That remains a forward-looking target, rather than a result achieved or a measure of current-year performance.

Conclusion

The remaining quarter of 2026 will test whether stronger cloud demand can translate into faster total contract growth and improved cash generation. Pegasystems has cautioned that both measures could remain under pressure through year-end, even as management retains its longer-term free-cash-flow target.
