Crown earnings increased in the third quarter of 2026, with reported diluted earnings per share rising to $2.08 from $1.85 a year earlier. Higher beverage can shipments supported sales, but input cost inflation weighed on segment income. The packaging company announced the results on October 19 for the quarter ended September 30 and discussed them on its October 20 earnings call.

Key Takeaways

  • Adjusted diluted earnings per share rose 7% to $2.39, while adjusted net income was unchanged at $259 million.
  • Higher material costs passed through to customers accounted for $405 million of the sales increase.
  • Management expects full-year adjusted earnings of $8.35–$8.45 per share and adjusted free cash flow of at least $950 million.

Crown earnings benefit from a lower share count

Crown’s third-quarter results announcement showed net income attributable to the company increasing to $225 million from $214 million. Income from operations rose to $442 million from $423 million.

Adjusted diluted earnings per share increased from $2.24 to $2.39 even though adjusted net income remained at $259 million. A smaller share base helped explain that difference: weighted-average diluted shares fell to about 108.3 million from 115.7 million.

Crown repurchased $81 million of common stock during the quarter. Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy J. Donahue said the company had acquired nearly 6% of its outstanding shares over the preceding 12 months.

Material costs lift sales but constrain segment income

Quarterly net sales reached $3.711 billion, compared with $3.202 billion a year earlier. The increase reflected higher beverage can shipments and the pass-through of $405 million in higher material costs, meaning much of the revenue growth came from recovering those costs rather than selling more packaging.

Global beverage can volumes increased approximately 6%. Donahue said shipments grew at double-digit rates in Asia, by 6% in North America and by 4% across Europe.

Nevertheless, total segment income fell to $484 million from $490 million as input cost inflation offset the contribution from higher shipments. Segment income excludes intangible amortization and restructuring and other charges, so it differs from reported operating income.

Management sets out earnings and cash-flow expectations

Chief Financial Officer Kevin Clothier said Crown expects full-year 2026 adjusted diluted earnings per share of $8.35–$8.45. Fourth-quarter guidance is $1.63–$1.73 per share.

Management also expects adjusted free cash flow of at least $950 million after approximately $550 million in capital spending. These are forward-looking targets, not completed results. Adjusted earnings and adjusted free cash flow are non-GAAP measures and do not replace their GAAP counterparts.

For the first nine months of 2026, Crown reported adjusted diluted earnings of $6.72 per share, up from $6.05 in the comparable 2025 period.

Capacity projects continue, including entry into India

Donahue said previously announced expansion projects in Brazil, Greece and Spain remained on plan.

Construction of a beverage can plant in Uttar Pradesh, India, began with groundbreaking in September. Commercial production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2028, making the project a longer-term expansion rather than a contributor to the reported quarter.

Conclusion

Crown’s next operating test is the fourth quarter, for which management has set adjusted earnings guidance of $1.63–$1.73 per share. The results will show whether shipment growth and cost recovery support its full-year earnings and cash-flow targets.
