Stronger steel prices and record shipments helped Steel Dynamics increase third-quarter 2026 net income to $756 million, up from $404 million a year earlier. The results, announced on October 19, followed an October 16 hot-rolled coil price reading of $1,255 per short ton, underscoring the stronger pricing environment for U.S. producers.

Key Takeaways

  • Third-quarter net income reached $5.26 per diluted share, compared with $2.74 a year earlier.
  • Higher realized steel prices and lower scrap costs expanded the company’s steelmaking margins.
  • Aluminum operations remained loss-making, with management expecting improvement in the fourth quarter.

Steel prices translate into higher realized margins

Steel Dynamics’ third-quarter 2026 results announcement showed net sales of $6.5 billion and record steel shipments of 3.8 million tons. Net income also increased from $534 million, or $3.69 per diluted share, in the second quarter.

The company’s average external steel selling price rose $102 sequentially to $1,400 per ton, while average ferrous scrap costs per ton melted fell $8 to $404. Those changes widened the spread between selling prices and a major raw-material cost, helping steel operations generate $1.0 billion in operating income, up 43% from the preceding quarter.

The October 16 hot-rolled coil reading was 52% above its year-earlier level and the highest in more than four years. That market benchmark is distinct from Steel Dynamics’ average realized price across its steel products; the two figures should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

Lower imports support a tighter domestic market

Chairman and Chief Executive Mark D. Millett described the third-quarter domestic steel market as supported by steady demand, low customer inventories and historically low imports. He said lead times extended and spot availability tightened across flat-rolled and structural steel products.

Millett also said recent trade actions reduced coated flat-rolled imports, supporting wider spreads on value-added products. Energy, nonresidential construction, automotive and industrial customers led the company’s steel demand during the quarter.

The benefit was not uniform across the business. Metals recycling operating income fell $15 million sequentially to $33 million as lower ferrous scrap prices compressed spreads. Steel fabrication operating income increased to $91 million from $85 million, with higher shipments and selling prices more than offsetting increased steel input costs.

Aluminum ramp-up remains the next operating test

Aluminum operations recorded a $26 million operating loss, a 21% improvement from the second quarter. Shipments totaled 55,000 metric tons, although production volumes were below expectations for several weeks because of quality-related yield losses.

Management said the coolant-composition issue behind those losses had been corrected and expected aluminum volumes and profitability to improve in the fourth quarter of 2026 and throughout 2027. These remain management expectations, not completed results.

All three cold mills were operational. The first continuous annealing and solution heat line was expected to ship finished automotive products before year-end, while the second was scheduled to become operational early in the first quarter of 2027.

Conclusion

The third-quarter results show stronger steel pricing translating into higher earnings, reinforced by record shipments and lower scrap costs. The next operating milestones are the planned year-end automotive aluminum shipments and the second heat-treatment line’s scheduled startup in early 2027.
