Crypto researcher Stacy Muur has identified 82 digital asset projects and protocols that reportedly shut down in 2026, spanning decentralized finance, blockchain infrastructure and Web3 gaming. The closures include businesses affected by security breaches and ventures unable to sustain operations.
Key Takeaways
- Muur’s list names 82 reported closures, including Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM and Step Finance.
- A separate DeFiLlama study identified product-market fit as the most commonly cited shutdown reason, ahead of funding and revenue problems.
- Investment has become more concentrated: venture funding increased while deal counts fell, and acquisitions accelerated.

What the crypto project shutdowns count measures
Muur published her list on X on Tuesday.
Her tally is not the only measure of the retrenchment. Research published by DeFiLlama in August identified 100 crypto projects that had announced shutdowns in 2026, including 40 in the preceding 90 days. These are separate attributed tallies, not figures that should be added together or treated as a single running count.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Blast | Announced its shutdown earlier in October, citing no credible path to economic viability despite previously attracting more than $2 billion in deposits. |
| Step Finance | Shut down in February following a major treasury breach. |
| Radiant Capital | Announced a wind-down in June after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit. |
| Satori Finance | Ceased operations after concluding that revenue could no longer support the business. |
Why prominent projects stopped operating
Coinbase-backed Satori Finance said revenue could no longer support the business.
Fundraising did not solve the revenue problem
DeFiLlama’s research identified a lack of product-market fit as the most frequently cited shutdown reason, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue and decisions to pivot to other products. The findings point to difficulty attracting enough users or earning enough to sustain operations.
Collectively, the projects in that research raised approximately $1 billion and generated $250 million in cumulative fees. Nine had raised more than $50 million each.
Bitcoin fell from its October 2025 record above $126,000 to below $60,000 earlier in 2026.
Capital is concentrating despite the closures
The shutdown wave has not coincided with a uniform retreat in investment. According to DeFiLlama, venture funding increased in the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year, even as the number of deals fell 80%. More funding alongside fewer deals indicates increasingly concentrated investment.
Mergers and acquisitions had reached 87 transactions, already 65% higher than the previous year.
